Trip #3: Korehsan Site, FL

May 12 - 13, 2007
Koreshan State Historic Site – Estero, FL

Now it’s really warming up. We didn’t bring bikes, but would have liked them to tour the campus of this turn of the century colony of people who thought we lived INSIDE the earth. Rented a canoe for a short row on the Estero River. No hot water in the trailer as the board went bad; also learned the importance of lateral balance and hide-a-keys as doors can lock when they accidentally and unexpectedly slam shut. Saw an Everglades fire on the way home. 250 mi RT

Park Info: The remains of an unusual pioneer settlement are preserved on the banks of the Estero River. In 1894, a religious visionary named Cyrus Reed Teed brought his followers from Chicago to Estero to construct a "New Jerusalem." Teed hoped it would become a city of 10 million people practicing the religion of Koreshanity. The colony, known as the Koreshan Unity, believed that the entire universe existed within a giant, hollow sphere. The colony began fading after Teed´s death in 1908, and in 1961 the last four members deeded the land to the state.

The Planetary Court which housed seven chosen women comprising the Planetary Chamber  -- a governing council (maybe they had something right afterall) that referred serious matters to Teed and a co-director named Victoria Gracia
