Getting hotter fast, but biked 14 miles in this beautiful park with old oaks and moss and native orchids. Arrived at night to do some unpracticed backing-up parking in the dark. Good thing the site was wide. Awoke early enough for a sunrise photo though the pines. 350 mi RT
Park Info: One of Florida´s oldest parks, opening to the public in 1931, this park was established when local citizens, concerned about plans to turn the hammock into farmland, promoted the hammock as a candidate for national park status. When Florida's state park system was established in 1935, Highlands Hammock became one of four original state parks. During the Great Depression, just prior to World War II, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed additional park facilities and the beginnings of a botanical garden. Visitors enjoy bicycling the scenic 3-mile loop drive, hiking the park´s nine trails, and the elevated boardwalk traversing an old-growth cypress swamp.
